The basics
What is a sleep study?
A sleep study is a painless test that records what your body does while you sleep — things like your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, and how often your sleep is interrupted. It's the most reliable way to diagnose conditions like sleep apnea. Some studies are done at home in your own bed; others take place overnight in our accredited lab. Either way, there are no needles and nothing that keeps you awake.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
In most cases, no — you're welcome to book directly with us. That said, some insurance plans require a referral from your primary care doctor before they'll cover a visit or a sleep study. We're glad to check your plan for you and let you know before your appointment, so there are no surprises. If you do need a referral, we'll help coordinate it.
Do you see children?
Yes — we care for patients age 4 and older, so children are welcome. Kids often show sleep problems differently than adults: snoring or restless sleep, trouble focusing at school, or bedwetting rather than obvious symptoms. Our team evaluates and treats both children and adults, in our Glendale office or by telehealth. See our pediatric sleep page for details, or call (602) 206-6262 and we'll help you get started.
Testing & results
What's the difference between a home sleep test and an in-lab study?
A home sleep test uses a small, easy-to-wear device you take home for one night — most people find it comfortable and simple to set up. It's a great fit for diagnosing straightforward obstructive sleep apnea. An in-lab study is a more detailed overnight test in our sleep center, used for more complex cases or when other conditions may be involved. Our lab suites are designed to feel more like a quiet hotel room than a hospital. Your physician will recommend whichever test fits your situation best.
How long does it take to get my results?
After your sleep study, a board-certified sleep physician reviews and interprets your data personally. Results are typically ready within a few days to about a week. We'll schedule a follow-up — in person or by telehealth — to walk you through what the study found and, if needed, build a treatment plan tailored to you. You won't be left wondering what it all means.
Is a sleep study covered by insurance?
Most major Arizona insurance plans and Medicare cover sleep studies and related treatment when they're medically appropriate. Coverage details — like deductibles and whether a referral is required — vary by plan. Our team verifies your specific benefits before your visit and explains any expected costs up front. Visit our insurance page or call (602) 206-6262 to check your plan.
How do I prepare for a sleep study?
Preparation is simple. On the day of your study, try to keep your routine as normal as possible, but avoid caffeine and alcohol in the afternoon and evening, and skip long naps. Take your regular medications unless your physician tells you otherwise. Wash and dry your hair without heavy products so the sensors stick well. For an in-lab study, just pack an overnight bag like you would for a night away — comfortable pajamas and your usual bedtime items. We'll send you clear instructions ahead of time.
Treatment
Is CPAP my only option?
Not at all. CPAP is highly effective and remains the gold standard for many people, but it isn't the only path. Depending on the type and severity of your apnea, you may be a good candidate for a custom oral appliance, the mask-free Inspire™ implant, or other approaches. Part of our job is finding the treatment you'll actually stick with — because the best therapy is the one that works for your life.
Do you offer telehealth visits?
Yes. Many of our consultations and follow-ups can be done by secure video visit from anywhere in Arizona — convenient if you're busy, live outside the immediate Glendale area, or simply prefer to meet from home. Some appointments and testing do require an in-person visit, and we'll always let you know in advance which option applies to your care.
